Overview
CIL supplied a Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) for the design and construction of a new Aldi supermarket at Caterham, Surrey.
Requirements
The demolition of the old Mercedes garage was completed before the groundworks commenced. A new concrete retaining wall was designed and built to accommodate the new Aldi store lower levels. The remaining railway boundary wall was kept but required underpinning.
Our Role
John Freeman was appointed as the CEM. Aldi, the Client, was the third party developer. The Network Rail ASPRO team managed the works under a BAPA arrangement. DSP Group was the main contractor, Craddys was the designer.
Technical Challenges
Overall the development and construction process for the superstructure was relatively straightforward. However due to the need to accommodate mobile cranes for the delivery of materials, numerous temporary works designs were provided in the latter part of the assurances.
Outcome
The store successfully opened in July 2025 after this 2-year construction project.
